The Palaszczuk Government has announced $12.4 million for 600 community groups – including $894,278 for Far North Queensland groups – in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the Gambling Community Benefit Fund was Queensland’s largest one-off grants program, which distributes about $53 million a year to communities.

In the latest round announced today, Mr Pitt said 602 groups would benefit from $12.4 million.

“Little Mulgrave Rural Fire Brigade has been allocated $35,000 to construct a new fire station and Southern Suburbs Junior League will receive $27,162 to go towards a portable grandstand,” Mr Pitt said.

“In addition, Cairns Stingrays Swimming Club will also receive $35,000 to purchase equipment and RSL Far Northern District Branch will get $35,000 to upgrade their facilities.

“This is terrific news for Far North Queensland. The Palaszczuk Government is ensuring community organisations have the funding they need to provide services to their community.”

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford was pleased community groups in his electorate would also benefit from the latest round of funding.

“Cairns RSPCA will receive $35,000 to purchase a vehicle and Trinity Beach Bulldogs Netball Club will get $35,000 to construct a court,” Mr Crawford said.

Mr Crawford said these community groups were vital to the region.

“Dedicated locals are the lifeblood of these community groups and we are ensuring they have funds needed for projects that would have otherwise been out of reach.

“We know how vital their work is, and that is why we contribute millions of dollars every round as part of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.”

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said applications for the next round would open later in July.

“Applications are assessed by the Community Benefit Funds Unit and are considered every quarter,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Community groups can also apply online for these grants worth between $500 and $35,000.”
