Cairns builders, developers and community housing providers are invited to attend a business briefing session to find out how to be part of building new social and affordable housing projects in the region.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said there were projects on offer for businesses of every size.
“Last week’s budget delivered in spades for Cairns and the Far North, with $342 million in new public works and Works for Queensland across the region,” he said.
“These investments are ensuring Cairns tradies and builders have a significant, long term Government led construction pipeline they can rely on.
“Whether your business is building small detached homes, or large scale developments, there’s work to be had – so come along to a session and find out how to be involved.”
Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the Housing Construction Jobs program, part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy, would see a range of opportunities on offer for local builders and tradies.
“Expressions of Interest are now open until July 31, and I’d encourage small, medium and large businesses to get onto the Q Tenders website and get involved,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Department of Housing and Public Works will host a business briefing event in Cairns on Thursday June 22, with sessions for developers, builders, community housing providers and tradespeople.
“The morning session will talk about how builders, developers and community housing providers can partner with government to deliver a range of housing solutions, and the evening session will take tradies through the process of registering for government work.”
Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy investment will see over 5000 new homes built over ten years, with 137 to be built in Cairns over the first five years of investment.
“This construction will support 31 full time jobs per year, and I want to see those jobs go to local tradies and builders wherever possible,” Mr Crawford said.
“The Housing Construction Jobs Program will deliver a strong pipeline of work that will help support the residential construction industry right across the state and offer jobs for local tradies.
“Projects include state-owned sites ready for immediate construction, identified private sector projects with development approvals in place, and precinct based development opportunities.”
The Cairns Housing Strategy Roadshow sessions will be held at 8am, Thursday June 22 at 43 The Esplanade, Cairns City.
