Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt has congratulated Isabella State School P&C on securing $31,818 from the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to build install a shade structure.

“The funds will be used to purchase and erect a hard shade structure which will enable Isabella State School to be compliant with new regulations,” Mr Pitt said.

“The provision of good quality shade for young children has been recognised as a key factor in reducing children’s exposure to sun damage.

“Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year in Queensland, skin cancer claims more than 300 lives – so it is important that we provide our kids with a safe place to play.”

Principal Monica Halbert said the shade structure would be a wonderful addition to the senior playground and strengthen the schools Sunsmart policy.

“This is a wonderful outcome for our hard working P&C,” Ms Halbert said.

“I would like to thank P&C President Nicki MacIsaac and our 2013 grants writer Eloise Cooper for making this happen.”

Mr Pitt said the grant allocations for this round take the total funding provided to not-for-profit organisations to over $606 million with more than 44,500 applications funded since 1994.

“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is an important initiative that supports the work of these not- for-profit organisations and I urge all community groups to apply for these grants.

“Grant allocations are announced quarterly and applications are accepted at any time.
