Shadow Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, says he will ask Qantas to explain the statewide and regional impacts of its plans to cut jobs.

“Decisions announced by Qantas today have direct impacts on Queensland jobs, our regional and state economies, and our tourism industry,” Mr Pitt said.

“I will be approaching Qantas to ask for a personal briefing on exactly what offers it is making to workers whose jobs may be cut or moved elsewhere as in the case of the 110 jobs at its Cairns crew base.

“Is it genuinely offering jobs elsewhere? Or is it an attempt to make moving unattractive so that workers accept payouts and jobs disappear altogether?

“The statement from Qantas that there will ‘…be no impact to our Cairns services as a result of the announcement…’ needs further explanation.

“Will there be changes – direct or indirect – to QantasLink and Jetstar services, and if so what will these impacts be?” Mr Pitt said.
