Shadow Treasurer Curtis Pitt said reports suggesting QANTAS was looking at mass job cuts across the country, including in Queensland, should be the spur Campbell Newman needs to finally do something to protect Queensland jobs.
“After standing by and allowing Queensland’s unemployment rate to rise to GFC levels, the Premier must draw a line in the sand and work with Mr Joyce to save every QANTAS job in Queensland,” Mr Pitt said.
“After promising to lower Queensland’s unemployment rate to 4% at the 2012 election, it currently sits at 6.1%. It’s a huge failure from the Premier that’s really hurting families across the state.
“Already, thousands more Queenslanders are out of work. Campbell Newman needs to work with QANTAS to ensure they don’t add to those job losses.
“There’s no doubt that QANTAS is under significant market pressures. However, all Queenslanders would be shocked if the assistance they are trying to receive from the Abbott Government was conditional upon mass job cuts in Queensland.
“QANTAS is Queensland born and bred. It must maintain a strong presence in Queensland, both in Brisbane and in regional centres.
“The former Labor Government worked with QANTAS to ensure continual investment in the aviation sector in Queensland, including the creation of thousands of jobs.
“The new LNP Government needs to show the same urgency to maintain investment in the sector and protect Queensland jobs.”
