Motorists using Gillies Range Road will have advanced warning of any major traffic delays thanks to the trial of a free SMS alert service starting this month.

Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said he wrote to Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace in October urging the Minister to extend the service to the Gillies Range Road.

“The trial is great news for regular users of this important link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands,” Mr Pitt said.

“Subscribers to this free service will receive messages on their mobile phones whenever traffic delays of more than 30 minutes are expected on the range section of Gillies Range Road between Gordonvale and Yungaburra.

“The Gillies Range carries approximately 2000 tourists, heavy transport vehicles, and local road users every day.

“This service will enable them to find out about road closures or incidents quickly, so they can plan an alternative route or make other arrangements.”

Mr Pitt said the SMS service on the Kuranda Range had grown to over 1000 subscribers since it was trialled in early 2008.

“If the trial on the Gillies Range Road is as well received as our existing Kuranda Range service, we will certainly be implementing the service permanently,” he said.

Motorists wishing to sign up for this free SMS service can call 13 19 40.
