Transport Minister Rachel Nolan and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt today announced that a second Transport Customer Service Centre (CSC) for Cairns would be opened at Bentley Park later this month.
Ms Nolan said the new CSC would dispense a wide range of transport services, including the provision of licences, vehicle registrations and 18+ cards.
“Cairns is one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions, and that is likely to continue in the long term. The Bligh Government is determined to ensure essential facilities are in place to meet that growth,” Ms Nolan said.
“This second centre will take a lot of pressure off the existing Kenny Street CSC, where the staff are doing a marvellous job in keeping waiting times at satisfactory levels despite ever-increasing demand.
“Bentley Park is a convenient location to the booming southern suburbs and as such is the ideal location for our second Customer Service Centre.”
The new centre will be opened at Bentley Village Shopping Centre, McLaughlin Road, Bentley Park from 9.30am on Wednesday, January 27 2010.
Mr Pitt welcomed the announcement and said the new centre would make access to Transport Department services easier and faster for the local community.
“This new CSC is in response to the tremendous growth of Cairns and the Far North and is designed to meet demand into the future,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Bligh Government has moved as quickly as possible to get this new centre up and running and it will be in full swing from the day the school term begins this year.
Mr Pitt said the Department of Transport and Main Roads was now finalising the process of fitting out the new centre and allocating staff.
“The new CSC will have eight counters, including a counter that is best placed to serve people with disabilities and a spacious and bright customer waiting area” Mr Pitt said.
“The Indigenous Driver Licensing Unit and Road Safety Unit will also be co-located permanently to this new location from their current temporary accommodation at Smithfield.”
Driver testing will continue to be conducted at the Kenny Street CSC rather than at Bentley Park.
