The Bligh Government is reducing the speed limit on the Bruce Highway at Wrights Creek to improve safety for motorists on the southern approach to Cairns.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the speed limit reduction was aimed at improving safety for the 18,000 road users that travel on the section of the highway each day.

“Safety of all road users is our number one priority, which is why my department recently conducted a review of the speed limit on the Bruce Highway south of Cairns,” Mr Wallace said.

“The department takes into consideration a number of factors when determining speed limits, including the road’s design, speed environment and crash history.

“As a result of this review, the department decided to reduce the speed limit on the section of highway from 100km/hr to 80km/hr to increase safety.

“This means the section of highway north of Deppeler Road, Edmonton to Warner Road, north of Gordonvale will be posted at 80km/hr.”

Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt welcomed the decision to reduce the speed limit, which was made in conjunction with Queensland Police Service and Cairns Regional Council.

“Earlier this year I wrote to the Minister calling for a reduction to the speed limit on this section of highway, particularly at Wrights Creek Bridge,” Mt Pitt said.

“I am pleased that the Minister has listened to the concerns of local residents, as well as the advice from the Police and the Council.

“This speed limit reduction will improve safety for the large number of people who commute between Cairns and Gordonvale each day.”

Mr Wallace said the speed limit change will come into effect at the end of September, in conjunction with the completion of roadworks at the Warner Road intersection, north of Gordonvale.

“New speed limit signs will be installed along the highway before the change comes into effect at the end of this month,” he said.

“I ask that motorists adhere to these new speed limits, both for their own safety and the safety of other road users travelling on the highway.

“Along with this review, the department is also conducting a review of overtaking opportunities on the Bruce Highway between Cairns and Gordonvale and south to Innisfail, to further improve safety for motorists on this key stretch of highway.”
